I am saddened that Arizona (that state in which I live) has voted against the marriage protection amendment. However, after reading the text of the amendment more thoroughly I can understand why it failed.
Instead of taking a stand against gay marriage ONLY we also stood against those who live together as heterosexual couples. While we as believers know this to be a sin, it is not “the sin we were fighting against.”
Amendment to Ban Gay Marriage
I am curious who wrote and approved this amendment to ban gay marriage. It was definitely worded wrong and needs to be readdressed at a later time. It is my opinion that the proposition should have read as follows: To preserve and protect marriage in this state, only a union between one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage by this state or its political subdivisions and no legal status for unmarried persons shall be created or recognized by this state or its political subdivisions that is similar to that of marriage.
The part that I have struck out is the part that caused us to strike out! If those who live together as heterosexuals had not felt threatened either physically or financially by this proposition I believe we would have had a very different result.
Forgive me if I am being impertinent but this should not have been overlooked. And I apologize if I appear to be criticizing you – I am not. I am simply wondering who wrote this marriage protection amendment and wanted to offer suggestions for the next time around (which I believe should not be for several years). We should let things simmer down for a while.
I am very glad that seven other states have joined the ranks of those who believe the truth about marriage. Perhaps with the correct wording we will be successful the next time around.
